This is the time of the year when you find out the truth in
baseball.
The truth as in who can play the game in the heat of a pennant
race.
As the Dodgers have found out the hard way, Adam LaRoche,
Atlanta's rookie first baseman, definitely can play the game.
LaRoche? The name seems to have a familiar ring.
That's because his father, Dave, is a former major leaguer. He
played the game, and played it very well, with the Angels, Twins,
Cubs, Indians and Yankees.
Pop was a left-handed pitcher, a two-time American League All-
Star.
Before that he was a three-sport star at West Torrance High. He
was a very good prep baseball player, perhaps a better basketball
