Article: Ethical wills leave a note of wisdom, inspiration and humor from the departed

A few years ago I visited the home of a couple where a large framed manuscript titled "Guide to My Grandchildren" was prominently displayed on a wall.

The guide was written to the couple's three children by their grandfather, who wanted to share his values on hard work, family and kindness for them to keep.

The grandfather has passed away. The three children are all grown now.

The parents, when doing their own estate planning, asked the children which personal items, such as furniture or jewelry, they would like to have.

To their surprise, what all three wanted most was the original copy of "Guide to My Grandchildren." So they had to draw straws.
