Costume designer Mara Blumenfeld must traverse two worlds in
"Silk," the latest of her many collaborations with Mary Zimmerman
that include "Eleven Rooms of Proust," "Galileo," "The Secret in the
Wings" and "Pericles" (the massive production staged at Washington
D.C.'s Shakespeare Theater this winter and set to be remounted at the
Goodman Theatre in January 2006).
You can see both worlds cataloged in the thick scrapbook she has
compiled for this project -- a looseleaf filled with elaborate
pictures gleaned from books and Internet sites detailing the clothing
styles of rich and poor in the Japan of the late 19th century (see
sketch below), as well as the fashions of that same time in Paris.
