Q: Sweet potato or yam?
Is there a difference between sweet potatoes and yams? My friend
and I would like to know so we can settle an argument.

Sweet potatoes and yams are two different, unrelated vegetables,
but what most Americans consider yams are actually sweet potatoes.
The terms yam and sweet potatoes became synonymous when Louisiana
growers used the term yam to market their moist, orange sweet
potatoes, according to The Sweet Potato Council of California.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture requires vegetables labeled as
yams always be accompanied by the words "sweet potato."
Sweet potatoes come in paler yellow, dry flesh and darker orange,
moist flesh varieties. ...
