Article: SP historical society names activist woman of the year

Human rights activist Yuri Kochiyama, better known as Mary Nakahara in San Pedro, will be honored by the San Pedro Bay Historical Society as Woman of the Year for her lifetime of work on major social issues.

The 83-year-old San Pedro native has protested issues including integrating schools, civil rights and reparations for Japanese- Americans who were tossed into internment camps.

The historical society honors a woman for her achievements every year in March during Woman's History Month.

"We always honor people like Susan B. Anthony during Woman's History Month, but this is our own icon," said Mitch Mardesich,
