Dad's doctorate at 72 springs from love of learning and father's devotion

Walking to UC Riverside's graduation ceremony, my cell phone rings.

It's Dad. He forgot something in the car. His Camry is in the parking lot not far from where I'm standing.

But he has the keys, and he's several hundred yards away.

Dressed in a dark green suit and black dress shoes, I start to sprint over concrete and grass.

Halfway to the line of tables where the graduates check in, my sprint downgrades to a jog. Then returns to a sprint. Then back to a jog.

I finally reach him.

"Doctoral graduate?" a woman staffing the tables asks me.

"No, that's my father," I reply, trying to catch my breath.

Wearing his black cap and gown, Dad seems calm. I'm frazzled.

He hands me the keys, and I'm off. ...
