Article: El Segundo's new mayor goes to bat for city

Don't mess with El Segundo.

Barely one year into his term as mayor, Kelly McDowell peppered his first State of the City address Wednesday with a list of the town's achievements and pledged to protect El Segundo from entities much larger than the tiny seaside community.

Among them, the upcoming base realignment and closure process. A preliminary list of military installations up for relocation or closure is expected by May 16.

"If the base is on the hit list, I assure you that we will fight even harder to get it off that list and keep it here in El Segundo," McDowell said.
