Rodriguez will skip winter ball season

NEW YORK -- In recent years, the Angels politely have suggested to closer Francisco Rodriguez not to play winter ball, hoping he'd rest his arm, considering how hard he throws and his value to the organization.

But Rodriguez has played anyway, feeling a sense of loyalty to his homeland of Venezuela, friends and family.

Rodriguez, however, has had a change of heart after being asked by Manager Mike Scioscia and pitching coach Bud Black to take it easy during the winter. The forearm strain that put him on the disabled list for most of May was enough to change his mind.

"Winter ball helped me get ready for the season," Rodriguez said. "I could get my pitches to where I wanted them and be sharp ...
