SAN JOSE -- Despite a sputtering economy and stinging inferiority complex, Northern California's biggest town officially outranks Detroit as the 10th largest city in the nation, the Census Bureau reported Thursday.

The swelling of San Jose (population 904,522) and the shrinking of Detroit (population 900,198) reflect a decades-long population boom throughout the West, as well as the Rust Belt's battle to reverse an exodus to better schools and lower crime in far-flung suburbs.

But officials in the self-declared "Capital of Silicon Valley" say the local boom signifies more than demographics. They hope the Top 10 status transforms sprawling acres of office parks and residential
