Wyoming voters would be wise to change the way this state's superintendent of public instruction is put into office. It is way past time to insulate that office from politics.

Presently, Wyoming's school superintendent is elected by the registered voters of the state. Members of the state's board of education are appointed by the governor.

Electing the superintendent puts that person too much at the whims of politics, requiring him or her to bend to the political winds rather than do the right -- and often hard -- thing for this state's young people. We are convinced that if Wyoming's superintendent were appointed, this state would not have a three-tiered diploma system ready to dumb down ...
