CHEYENNE -- With the recent additions of Universal Transverse
Mercator data and other Global Positioning Unit-friendly information
on U.S. Geological Survey and other topographic maps, getting around
in the woods has become a whole lot simpler.
But a GPS unit by itself isn't enough.
Like all electronic instruments, GPS units run on batteries, and
batteries fail. Also, in cold weather batteries don't last as long
because cold drains them more quickly.
If you carry a GPS unit into the field, be sure to also carry
plenty of extra batteries. If it's cold out, keep one set of extra
batteries in a pants pocket where ...
