To area ski and snowboard enthusiasts, the opening of Highway 130
over the Snowy Range is a much-anticipated event.
Daffodils bloom, trees bud and skiers climb up and slide down
Medicine Bow Peak and the adjacent slopes.
During the winter, getting to the base of the peak requires miles
of uphill trudging starting from the road closure gate at Green Rock
Picnic Ground. When the road opens, the approach is very short,
allowing skiers to spend more time on the "steeps."
Cheyenne's Reg Rothwell is an avid backcountry skier and, for
nearly 30 years, he has been one of the first to take advantage of
the easier access to the top of the Snowy Range.
