BIGHORN SHEEP ARE SURPRISING TO CAREFUL OBSERVERS

The panorama spanned before us. It was awesome.

In a little valley to our right, 80 elk grazed and seemed unaware of the ogling humans. Three hundred yards straight ahead were 50 bighorn sheep. To their left, a dozen skitterish mule deer nervously looked our way, ready to bolt if things got too uncomfortable. Another two dozen bighorns grazed farther to the left.

The six of us stood on Torrey Rim, southwest of Dubois, on the eastern slope of Whiskey Mountain. This is home to the largest single band of bighorn sheep in North America.
