Whenever the discussion about a city-wide smoking ban is mentioned at City Council meetings, members get cold feet.

Now news from Helena, Mont., should change that.

Doctors in that town say heart attacks fell by more than half last summer after voters passed a broad indoor smoking ban. Data suggest that clearing up the air in bars and restaurants quickly improved everyone's health.

Unfortunately, Helena's smoking ban only lasted for six months after a legal challenge. Heart attacks have returned to their normal level in Helena.
