The air was crisp and chilled. I added gloves, a neck gaiter and
skullcap as armor against the cold.
Snow crunched beneath my feet. Two inches of the white stuff
persisted on the ground after the season's first snowfall a couple
days earlier. I was surprised it hadn't all melted, but figured the
high elevation kept things frosty.
I was in the Snowy Range just west of Medicine Bow Peak at an
elevation of nearly 10,000 feet. It was a week before the opening of
rifle deer hunting season, and I had the area pretty much to myself
at that early hour. I expected and came prepared for cool
temperatures. While the sky was crystal clear, a 15 mph breeze added
to the chill.
