Brian Butko started taking the scenic route to work when he was
the editor of the Western Pennsylvania History magazine.
The route later sparked an idea for a book: "Greetings from the
Lincoln Highway: America's First Coast-to-Coast Road."
The Lincoln Highway started on the East Coast in Times Square and
ended in San Francisco. It paralleled the original western route
Transcontinental Railroad in 1913 and was the first designated state
road in Wyoming.
"The road is near where I live in Pittsburgh, which is an
alternative to the Pennsylvania Turnpike," Butko said. "The turnpike
is flatter, but it's a toll road. The Lincoln Highway is a scenic
alternative."
