African leaders deal with conflicts, poverty, diseases at AU summit

ABUJA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- African leaders are in closed-door talks Monday at an African Union (AU) summit in Abuja, Nigeria, aimed at working out ways of combating conflicts, poverty and killer diseases on the world's poorest continent.

The host of the two-day, twice-yearly summit, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, who chairs the 53-member pan-African body, said Sunday evening that a lot of positive changes were now taking place in Africa, despite the continent sill had problems and challenges.
