International Biodiversity Conference calls for fight against species loss

PARIS, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Some 1,200 experts gathering in Paris on the first day of a UN International conference on biodiversity launched Monday an appeal to governments for fight against species loss.

"Biodiversity is being destroyed irreversibly by human activities," according to the proposal published by the director of the scientific committee Michel Loreau.

"The rate at which humans are altering the environment, the extent of those alterations and their consequences for the distribution and abundance of species, ecosystems and genetic variability are unprecedented in human history," it said.
