Togolese parliament approves late president's son as speaker

LOME, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Togolese lawmakers on Sunday approved Faure Gnassingbe, son of the country's late president who died Saturday, as the speaker of parliament, paving the way for him to take over presidency.

The motion to appoint Faure Gnassingbe as the speaker of the 81- member national assembly was approved by all 67 deputies present in parliament.

Late president Gnassingbe Eyadema died at the age of 69 after ruling Togo for 38 years. His son Gnassingbe was later in the day invited by the military authorities to take over power.
