Court's upholding of Zambian president's election shock opposition parties

LUSAKA, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- The decision made by the Supreme Court to uphold the election of President Levy Mwanawasa in the 2001 presidential election has shocked opposition political parties in Zambia.

Three losing presidential candidates in the 2001 elections had petitioned the Zambian president's victory saying he was fraudulently elected and were seeking the court to nullify the results and call for fresh elections.

But in a ruling passed by the court on Wednesday night, the judges said the Zambian president was duly elected and refused to nullify the results.
