Ruling parties defeated in northern German state

BERLIN, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Social Democratic-Green coalition has lost their control in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein in Sunday's local elections.

According to exit polls conducted by German TV chancel ARD, the Social Democrats (SPD), won 38.5 percent of votes, down from 43.1 percent in 2000, while its main opposition party Christian Democratic Union (CDU) increased its share of votes from 35.2 to 40.2 percent.
