The New York Yankees and Texas Rangers were on the verge last
night of completing a major trade that would send shortstop Alex
Rodriguez, the American League's most valuable player last season, to
New York for second baseman Alfonso Soriano and a minor leaguer,
according to baseball officials.
Several sources said the deal was expected to be finalized today
or Monday. Newsday, which first reported the trade in Saturday's
editions, said Rodriguez was already making plans to travel to Tampa,
where the Yankees will open spring training on Tuesday.
"There's some fine tuning that needs to be done, but it should get
done," said an industry source familiar with the discussions.
