Australia, Malaysia agree to start free trade agreement negotiations

CANBERRA, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Australian Prime Minister on Thursday announced that Australia and Malaysia had signed a declaration of intent to begin negotiations on a free trade agreement after meeting with his visiting counterpart Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Badawi arrived here Wednesday night, starting his first official visit to Australia, which is also the first visit to Australia by a Malaysian leader in 21 years.

A free trade agreement with Malaysia will be worth 1.9 billion dollars (1.46 billion US dollars) to the Australian economy over the next 20 years.
