Singapore enhances preparedness for influenza pandemic outbreak

SINGAPORE, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Singapore is raising its level of preparedness for an influenza pandemic outbreak, according to a statement by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday.

The ministry said that it has begun to stockpile Tamiflu, a drug currently used for the treatment of the type A influenza infections,and thus being in high demand but in short supply worldwide.

It is also making efforts to ensure that Singapore will get supplies of vaccines against the H5N1 influenza virus as soon as they are available, while the development of such vaccines is expected to take four to six months.
