Uganda targets self-reliance on sugar

KAMPALA, May 31 (Xinhua) -- In a bid to be self-reliant, Uganda 's sugar industry is set to boost this year's sugar output by 21 percent through plant and farmland expansions, local press reported on Tuesday.

Uganda Sugar Cane Technologists Association (USCTA) said in its latest report that the country is set to produce 235,646 tons of sugar this year compared to 195,000 tons in 2004.
