Russia to keep military presence in South Kurils unchanged

MOSCOW, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Russia will keep its military presence unchanged in the South Kuril islands, claims over which remain a half- century dispute with Japan, as it sees no conditions for any change of forces there, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Thursday.

"We are not planning to either reduce or increase our military presence in the South Kurils. This I can say quite certainly," Ivanov, who is on a working trip to the Far East, told the Interfax news agency in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

At present, a Russian battalion and border forces are deployed on the islands. ...
