Article: Serbian spruce super choice for Chicago

The Serbian spruce, Picea omorika, is a tall, graceful evergreen that is underutilized in the home landscape. It makes a beautiful specimen tree because of its pendulous branching habit and narrow pyramidal shape. In fact, it usually reaches 50 to 60 feet tall and 20 to 25 feet wide.

This spruce can also be used in a grouping or as a natural screen. Its needles are dark green above and the undersides are white, giving the tree a blue-green overall color. The cones are another interesting feature. Held aloft, they are purple when young, and then they mature to reddish brown.
