Ex-Hutu rebel leader Nkurunziza elected new president of Burundi
BUJUMBURA, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Burundi's lawmakers on Friday
elected ex-Hutu rebel leader Pierre Nkurunziza as president of the
central African country in an effort to bring the 12- year-long civil
conflicts to an end.
Nkurunziza, the only candidate for Burundi's presidential
election, has vowed to bring peace, justice and democracy to the
people of the central African country.
"There will not be any patience to whoever will disturb peace in
the country," Nkurunziza, the chairman of the predominantly Hutu
Forces for the Defense of Democracy (FDD), said while calling on the
