Russia to keep troops in Moldova, says defense minister

MOSCOW, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Friday that Russian troops will stay in Moldova as long as arsenals and property owned by Russia remain there.

Moldova, an ex-Soviet republic, is pressing Moscow to pull its 1,500 troops out of the breakaway Trans-Dniestria region, where most inhabitants are Slavic and Russian-speaking.

During a trip to Russia's Pacific coast, Ivanov said many of the troops are protecting Russian arsenals and will not be withdrawn as long as Russian military weapons and ammunition remain in the region, Russian news agencies reported.
