Fat children hoping to enjoy a donkey ride this summer will have
to start watching the calories, or they may find themselves left
behind while their slimmer friends saddle up.
Under new animal cruelty rules, no one weighing more than eight
stone will be allowed to ride the animals. With childhood obesity on
the rise, this could mean a whole generation of overweight
youngsters missing out on a traditional seaside pastime.
The code of practice, launched by the Devon Donkey Sanctuary in
Blackpool yesterday could also cause problems for donkey ride
operators, who will have the tricky task of gently breaking it to
parents that their children are simply too fat.
