Zambia's biggest power station shut down due to heavy rains

LUSAKA, Dec. 25 (Xinhua) -- Zambia's biggest power station on the Kafue river has been shut down due to Saturday night's heavy rains that damaged some parts of the equipment, local media reported on Sunday.

Rodney Sisala, managing director of Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (ZESCO), the power station's operator, was cited by Zambia's official news agency as saying the heavy rains in the area caused landslides which led to water, mud, trees, rocks and other debris to gush into the power station through the emergency access tunnel.

Sisala said the station drainage system could not divert the water away from the power station ...
