Backgrounder: Basic facts about South Korea

BEIJING, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao kicked off a state visit to South Korea on Wednesday. Following is a brief introduction about the country, officially known as the Republic of Korea:

South Korea, a country in northeastern Asia with a population of over 48.8 million, occupies the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, which extends about 1,000 km southward from northeastern China. The total area of South Korea is 99,600 sq km, including about 3,000 islands.

The country is bounded on the east by the Sea of Japan, and its western coastline faces China's Shandong Province across the Yellow Sea.
