Uganda's independent candidate gives up 2006 presidential race

KAMPALA, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's independent candidate Nasser Ntege Sebagala has withdrawn from the 2006 presidential race and asked his supporters to vote Democratic Party (DP) candidate John Ssebaana Kizito.

Sebagala, who chose to run after failing to win nomination on the DP ticket, was quoted by local press on Thursday as saying that following several meetings with the party's National Executive Committee (NEC) about the deep rift his candidature had caused in the party he decided to quit the presidential race.
