Switzerland pledges extra cash to combat bird flu

GENEVA, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Switzerland has committed a further 1.1 million Swiss francs (about 860,000 U.S. dollars) on combating bird flu in Asia, the official website Swissinfo reported on Tuesday.

The contribution came on top of the 4.8 million Swiss francs (about 3.8 million U.S. dollars) earmarked by the Swiss government last September to help countries fight bird flu and avert a possible human pandemic.
