Nikkei stock average rises to new 5-year high

TOKYO, Feb. 2 (Xinhua) -- Japan's benchmark Nikkei stock average rose sharply Thursday to a new five-year high.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 230.46 points, or 1.40 percent, to 16,710.55, its highest closing since Sept. 1, 2000.

The Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 16.78 points, or 0.99 percent, to 1, 711.02, its best finish since April 10, 2000.
