Scientists find trace of White wine in ancient Egypt
LONDON, Feb. 15, (Xinhua) -- It seems that Tutankhamen, the
teenage king of ancient Egypt, headed into the afterlife with a good
supply of fine white wine, the weekly New Scientist reports said in
its issue to be published Saturday.
Researchers from the University of Barcelona in Spain used liquid
chromatography and mass spectrometry to analyse the residue of six
wine jars found in Tut's tomb.
All six contained tartaric acid, which is characteristic of
grapes, but only one contained syringic acid, which is only found in
the skin of red grapes and gives red wine its colour.
