Article: EU's top court rules feta cheese stands alone -- unique to Greece

BRUSSELS, Belgium -- The European Union's highest court on Tuesday finally settled the fate of feta cheese, decreeing it as a traditional Greek product deserving protection throughout the 25- nation EU in a ruling that went against industrial producers elsewhere in Europe.

Germany and Denmark, backed by France and Britain, had challenged the designation of origin for the salty, crumbly cheese and turned it into a gastronomic fight lasting almost two decades, involving lobbyists, the EU's head office and, finally, the European Court of Justice.
