U.S. 30-year mortgage rates rise to 6.53 percent

WASHINGTON, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Rates on 30-year mortgages across the United States have climbed up to their highest level in nearly four years, Freddie Mac reported Thursday.

In the week to April 20, rates on 30-year, fixed-rate mortgages rose to 6.53 percent from 6.49 percent last week, the mortgage company's weekly nationwide survey showed.

The rate of 6.53 percent was the highest point since the week ended July 12, 2002, when 30-year mortgage rates stood at 6.54 percent.
