Mass slaughter of dogs in anti-rabies compaign sparks concern

KUNMING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Mouding became a much quieter place this week when the barks of more than 50,000 of the county's dogs were silenced in an anti-rabies slaughter campaign.

"The dogs had to be killed, because it's terrible if people get rabies," said Yang Jian, a villager in Mouding County in southwest China's Yunnan Province, where the campaign took place.

A sharp increase in deaths from rabies led to the mass slaughter of dogs in the county. At least 481 people were bitten by dogs in July. Three of them have since died and one is in critical condition, according to the county's disease prevention and control ...
