Israeli PM appoints interim justice minister

JERUSALEM, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Wednesday appointed Housing and Construction Minister Meir Sheetrit as interim justice minister, replacing Haim Ramon, who resigned on Sunday over accusations of sexual harassment.

Sheetrit will stay in office for a three-month period while Ramon faces trial, by which time Olmert said he hoped Ramon would be exonerated, according to local media reports.

Olmert was quoted as saying that he appointed Sheetrit because he had served as justice minister in the past and was successful in the position.
