Water level in Yangtze River falls to record low

NANCHANG, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) - With drought conditions and high temperatures prevailing since July, the water level in the Yangtze River's middle reaches hit a record low on Wednesday.

With little rainfall filling its upper reaches, the water level in the Jiangxi province section of the Yangtze River fell to 11.81 meters, breaking the previous low of 12.01 meters over the same period in 1972, said Hu Jin, a worker with the Jiujiang Hydrologic Station in Jiangxi.

The water level is the lowest since the beginning of hydrologic records for this section in 1885, said Hu.
