Swiss voters to decide payout to new EU members

GENEVA, July 12 (Xinhua) -- Swiss voters will have the final word on whether the country should pay a financial contribution to the 10 newest European Union countries.

The rightwing Swiss People's Party, a major party in the Swiss parliament, announced on Wednesday that it had succeeded in gathering enough signatures to force a referendum on the issue.

The party said it had collected more than 70,000 signatures from the population, far more than the 50,000 needed for a referendum to go ahead.

The vote is expected to take place on Nov. 26 this year.

Switzerland, which is not a member of the EU, had pledged to pay 1 billion Swiss francs ...
