Nigerian gov't urged to revive indigenous languages

LAGOS, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Nigerian government on Thursday was urged to offer indigenous languages courses in university to revive the endangered culture.

At a one-day national workshop on best practices to safeguard endangered Nigerian languages held in Enugu, southern Nigeria, Enugu State Governor Chimaroke Nnamani called on the government for compulsory teaching and learning of indigenous languages in universities.

At the workshop jointly organized by UNESCO and Nigeria's National Council for Arts and Culture, Nnamani said this would " help to revive the country's endangered languages."
