EU earmarks aid to Turkish Cypriots

BRUSSELS, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- The European Union (EU) on Friday agreed to allocate 38.1 million euros to support the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community in the northern part of the divided Cyprus island.

The financial assistance will mainly be used to build infrastructure, spur economic and social development and to bring the Turkish Cypriot community closer to the EU, the EU's executive European Commission said in a statement.

In February this year, EU member states agreed on an aid of 259 million euros for the Turkish Cypriots to facilitate the reunification of the Cyprus island.
