Swiss voters approve economic aid for newest EU members

GENEVA, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Swiss voters on Sunday approved government plans for 1 billion Swiss francs (about 800 million U.S. dollars) in aid to the 10 newest European Union member states.

Final results from Sunday's nationwide vote show 53 percent in favor of the funds, which are to be used for a series of projects over the next 10 years to help strengthen economies of the 10 mostly Eastern European states, which joined the EU on May 1, 2004.

The Swiss government pledged to contribute the sum during negotiations on a package of bilateral treaties with the EU in 2004.
