Japan's lower house of parliament approves defense agency upgrade bill

TOKYO, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- The Lower House of parliament on Thursday afternoon passed a bill raised by the Japanese government to upgrade the Defense Agency into a ministry as anticipated with the force of a majority enjoyed by the ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and the New Komeito party, and the main opposition Democratic Party of Japan.

The bill, the first of its kind by the government, was approved at a lower house plenary session after clearing the Security Committee earlier in the day.
