Article: 'Ice Man' helped growth of figure skating here

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Joseph Serafine, a member of the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame whom Scott Hamilton once dubbed "Ice Man," has died. He was 88.

Mr. Serafine died last Friday, according to U.S. Figure Skating.

A vice president of the organization, Mr. Serafine also was a national judge, referee and ice technician.

"Joe had a distinguished record of service and commitment to U.S. Figure Skating," said USFSA president Ron Hershberger. "He was a major contributor to the growth of figure skating in the Chicago area. Beyond those activities he was truly a gentleman, and he always placed the best interest of the skaters as his first priority."
