Echoing the world tide, the Chinese government decided to promote
Mandarin overseas in 2004. In November, the first Confucius Institute
was founded in Seoul, the Republic of Korea.
In two years' time, the number has climbed to 81 scattered across
Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania.
Adding to the expanding list are 99 foreign organizations and
universities which have put forward their applications.
Following the initial success, the Office has mapped out an even
more ambitious plan: to establish 100 Confucius Institutes by the end
of 2006 and 1,000 by 2020.
