UN Refugee Agency launches budget appeal for 2007

GENEVA, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said on Friday that it needs 1.06 billion U.S. dollars next year to help millions of people fleeing persecution and conflicts around the world.

"A billion dollars sounds like a lot of money but it is equivalent to just a dollar a week for each of the 21 million people we help," Antonio Guterres, the UN high commissioner for refugees, said in a statement.

The annual appeal aims to help some 8.6 million refugees, 6.6 million internally displaced persons, some 1.6 million returnees, 770,000 asylum seekers and 2.3 million stateless people, the statement said.
