Key Nikkei index hits 7-month high

TOKYO, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- The key Nikkei index hit a seven- month high on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Friday, on the back of gains in a key U.S. stock index to a record high and improved business confidence in Japan reported by the Bank of Japan in its latest Tankan survey earlier in the day.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 85.11 points, or 0.51 percent, to 16,914.31, the highest since May 10.

The broader Tokyo Stock Price Index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange gained 5.55 points, or 0.34 percent, to 1,657.40.
